Where it started (2004)
Doccol identified a key problem in experimental stroke research: the inconsistent quality of stroke models. Its answer was a standardized occluder — the silicone rubber-coated monofilament for middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), which stroke researchers came to call the "MCAO suture". It was designed to cut the two failure modes that undermine a stroke study: incomplete occlusion and intracranial bleeding.

Used in experienced hands, Doccol MCAO sutures have been reported to bring the standard deviation of infarct volume down to about 5% of the mean — low enough that the method has been cited as a methodological new standard for MCAO-model quality.
