A biotech company that started from solving real problems in biological research. Founded in 2004 and based in Sharon, Massachusetts, Doccol builds standardized tools for experimental stroke research — silicone rubber-coated MCAO sutures, microcatheters, microsurgical instruments and PID temperature controllers — used by researchers worldwide.

How it grew

One problem at a time

Where it started (2004)

Doccol identified a key problem in experimental stroke research: the inconsistent quality of stroke models. Its answer was a standardized occluder — the silicone rubber-coated monofilament for middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), which stroke researchers came to call the "MCAO suture". It was designed to cut the two failure modes that undermine a stroke study: incomplete occlusion and intracranial bleeding.

A new standard for consistency

Used in experienced hands, Doccol MCAO sutures have been reported to bring the standard deviation of infarct volume down to about 5% of the mean — low enough that the method has been cited as a methodological new standard for MCAO-model quality.

Microcatheters (2010)

Doccol microcatheters connect permanently to an industry-standard Luer lock or stopcock, removing the transition tubing and needle connection older designs relied on and cutting dead volume — for cannulation of the tail, femoral, carotid and brachial vessels and the jugular veins.

Alongside sutures and catheters, Doccol supplies carefully selected microsurgical tools and its own Arduino-based PID temperature controllers — the physiological support a consistent model depends on.

Working with SPAN

Doccol collaborates with the Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network (SPAN), which runs rigorous late-stage preclinical studies of cerebroprotective therapies alongside reperfusion treatments such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy. SPAN uses Doccol sutures and microcatheters for the consistent, reproducible occlusion its multi-site design depends on.
